A conversation with Jean Marie Vienney, Field Educator at Rwaza Health Center.

What motivated you to join GHI?

I first learned about GHI from Facebook. I learned that there is a fight against malnutrition by creating gardens for families that have stunting issues. I got so excited because I studied agriculture, and making gardens felt like something I can do. Doing that is so beneficial to Rwandans and fighting against malnutrition in young children. It was interesting to me. When I heard about the vacancy in GHI, I applied like others to give my contribution as a Rwandan.

Why do you think nutrition is so important?

Generally, nutrition is the key to life. If you eat well, you live well. If you don’t eat well, you suffer. Stunting in small children is the main challenge we are facing nowadays. It’s a result of eating an incomplete diet when families don’t know how to prepare a balanced meal. Nutrition is so important; it’s a foundation of living a healthy life.

What’s the favorite part of your job?

In my daily work, the first thing that makes me happy is explaining how to prepare a balanced meal and its importance to families. The second thing is visiting them. Giving them seeds is important because some lack gardens due to lack of seeds. When I take the seeds to them and help a woman make a garden, I feel happy the next time I go there and find the family eating the vegetables and fruits from the garden we made together.

What do you like to do outside work?

Outside my work, I like travelling to explore Rwanda. Secondly, I like reading the news to get updates on what is going on in our country.

The funny thing your co-workers don’t know about you

I don’t have a specific thing my co-workers don’t know about me. I am ostentatious. People easily know what I like and what I don’t like. I don’t have something special or secret people don’t know about me.

What is your favorite fruit or vegetable?

I like eating green beans and carrots.

Is there anything you would like to tell other co-workers?

I can tell my co-workers that our work is really necessary. It’s so beneficial to our country because it benefits our neighbours and friends. Again, malnutrition is a very big challenge in developing countries like Rwanda. So, we have to love this job to help our country, our kids, and Rwandans get out of it. Thank you.
