This Rwandan proverb implies that foreign support comes not on a continuous basis, but only when the need is ostensibly apparent. International development projects are frequently temporary, involve large sums of money, and seek immediate results.

GHI challenges this paradigm. It does not promise participants an immediate solution; rather, the gardens serve as places for those facing similar challenges to mobilize and work together, producing their own high-nutrient food. GHI strives to strengthen local organizations and infrastructure already in place rather than impose new protocols and structures.
