Staff Spotlight: Darius Nshimiyimana
A conversation with Darius Nshimiyimana, Field Coordinator in Karongi District. Darius trains, monitors and supports schools participating in GHI’s World Food Programme Partnership.
How did you begin working at GHI?
I started working for GHI in July 2018. I learned about GHI online. I learned about what they do and saw that the listing matched my experience; so I applied because the program was similar to what I had been doing.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I have many. One of my favorite things is teaching how to make a balanced meal through One Pot, One Hour. I enjoy it because it makes people happy when we teach them. It’s so important to us and the participants because it is a great way to stay healthy.
What’s your favorite vegetable?
I like cassava leaves and amaranth.
Why do you think nutrition is so important?
After graduating from high school, I started teaching primary school years 5 & 6. I used to teach students lessons about nutrition. While teaching, I came to understand the components of a balanced diet and its importance to our bodies very well. Nutrition is very important because it helps us live a healthy life and prepare for the future.
What do you like doing outside of work?
My most interesting hobby outside work is singing. I like singing gospel songs, Catholic songs. I am a Catholic; I don’t sing modern songs. When I get time, that’s the first thing I do. It helps me release stress and feel happy when I am sad. The songs help me forget things that might be bothering me and feel happy. I have grown to love it.
What’s something your coworkers might not know about you?
I am sure my co-workers don’t know that I like singing. As I said, I like singing, but I don’t know if people know that. When I wake up during the night, I sometimes sing just because I feel like it. If I am teaching and feel like there is something I need to fix, I start singing.
Anything you’d like your co-workers or anybody else to know?
Out of all the places I have worked in my life, I am so glad to work for Gardens for Health International. We have a slogan, “Turikumwe” - We Are Together. We are collaborative. I see that people in GHI have team work spirit, love, and fraternity. They are different from where I lived or worked previously. I am so happy to be part of GHI; I feel at home here.

Ni gute waje gukorana n’ Umurima w’ Ubuzima?
Natangiye gukora mu Murima w’ Ubuzima mu kwezi kwa Nyakanga 2018. GHI nayimenyeye kuri Internet/Murandasi mpamenyera ibyo bakora n’ uko bakeneye umukozi. Ibyo biza guhuza na experience nari mfite bituma mbasaba akazi kuko ibyo bakora bisa n’ ibyo nari nsanzwe nkora. Ni uko baza kumpa akazi.
Ni iki ukunda cyane ku kazi kawe?
Ni byinci. Namenye ikintu gishya ku mirire: inkono imwe, isaha imwe, indyo yuzuye. Iki nicyo gice nkunda cyane kuko gishimisha cyane abo tukigisha kandi kikaba kidufitiye akamaro, kidufasha kugira ubuzima bwiza.
Ni uruhe ruboga ukunda cyane?
Nkunda isombe na dodo.
Ni ukubera iki wumva imirire myiza ari ingenzi?
Imirire myiza ni ingenzi kubera impamvu zitandukanye. Nkirangiza amashuri yisubumye, nahise ntangira kwigisha mu mwaka wa gatanu n’ uwagatandatu w’ amashusri abanza nigishaga amasomo ajyanye n’ imirire myiza. Mu gihe nigishaga nagendaga nsobanukirwa neza ibijyanye n’ indyo yuzuye n’ akamaro kayo ku mibiri yacu. Imirire myiza rero ni ingenzi kuko idufasha kugira ubuzima bwiza no gutegura ejo heza hazaza.
Ni iki ukunda gukora nyuma y’ akazi?
Ikintu kincimisha nyuma y’ akazi ni ukuririmba. Nkunda kuririmba indirimbo z’ Imana, z’ Abanyagaturika. Ndi Umunyagaturika ntabwo njya ndirimba indirimbo z’ isi. Iyo mbonye umwanya, ndaririmba. Ndabikunda cyane kuko bituma nduhuka nkanamererwa neza nk’ igihe nari mbabaye. Indirimbo zimfasha kwibagirwa ibihe bibi, nkanezererwa. Nisanzwe mbikunda gutyo.
Ni iki abantu mukorana baba batakuziho?
Ndizerako abantu dukorana bataziko nkunda kuririmba. Nk’ uko nabivuze, nkunda kuririmba nubwo ntazi niba abandi babizi. Njya mbyuka nijoro nkaririmba iyo numvishe binjemo. N’ iyo ndikwigisha nkumva hari akantu nshaka guhinduraho, mpita niririmbira.
Ntakindi kintu wabwira abantu mukorana cyangwa abandi bantu?
Mu buzima busanzwe, mu matsinda, cyangwa aho nkora, Nishimira Umurima w’ Ubuzima cyane. Dufite icyivugo kigira kiti “Turikumwe”, turafatanya. Iyo mpagereranyije n’ Umurima w’ Ubuzima, mbona abakozi bo mu Murima w’ Ubuzima bakorera hamwe, barakundana, kandi bagaragaza ubuvandimwe. Batandukanye cyane n’ aho nabaye cyangwa abandi twakoranye mbere. Nishimira cyane kuba mu muryango wa GHI, nisanga mu muryango.
