A conversation with Alphred Uwamurengeye, Farm Technician and Staff Member of the Month for September 2018.

How long have you worked for GHI?

This is my 7th year working for GHI.

Can you describe what your job is?

I am a seedbed technician, working with seeds and cultivating plants. I do the husbandry on avocadoes, mangoes, oranges, and tomato trees. That’s my job. But, if I am done with my work, it doesn’t mean that I stop working. I go ahead and help others with their works.

How did you start working at GHI?

Since 1995, I was a soldier. But, I was chased away because I was young. I started working with GHI since the GHI people came to the Ministry of Agriculture where I worked from. I was working in seedbed. They asked me to look for a person who can help them in seed multiplication.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

One thingI like about my job is seed multiplication and cultivating. I feel like I can’t do anything else apart from agriculture.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Something I like doing outside work is teaching people what I do at work. I teach them how to build small vegetable gardens.

What’s something your co-workers might not know about you?

Something they don’t know about me? There are many. They don’t know that I do sports when I reach home and even in the weekends. That’s something they don’t know about me.

What’s your favorite thing to grow?

I like growing everything, but especially avocadoes and mangoes.

Why is that?

Because the kids like them. Kids like avocadoes; adults also like them. Kids love mangoes because they are nutritious.

Thanks so much!
